where to hunt

Depending on where you live in the United States, there are different seasons and regulations for the various types of pigeons that live here. However, many states allow free season, allowing you to hunt most of the year. This is especially true if you're targeting invasive species, which often have year-round in-season dates and unlimited luggage allowances!

Depending on the state you intend to hunt in, you still need to obtain the proper hunting license and hunt during the correct season dates. A little homework online can show you all these dates and where you can buy a hunting license.

Finding a quality pigeon hunting location in your area is also very simple. All you have to do is find where they feed and you are sure to find lots of pigeons. Farmland is the most popular option, such as harvested wheat or corn. Once you have a handle on where they feed, you can start hunting them!

Of course, before you are ready to hunt pigeons, you need a good shotgun. While the wide variety of shotguns and ammo can be daunting, pigeons don't need anything special. Stick to popular shotgun sizes, such as 12 or 20 gauge, and load them with standard birdshot. This can be a 7, 7 ½ or 8 sized bullet. Pigeons are fairly small and don't take much to bring down, so don't stress your shotgun too much!

How to Hunt Pigeons

The preferred method of shooting pigeons involves shooting birds as they fly past you (also known as pass shooting). Once you arrive at the hunting area, find a comfortable place to stand or sit and wait patiently for the pigeons to come to you. The best hunting times of the day are after sunrise and before sunset. This is when the pigeons are most active and feeding, giving you the opportunity to fly them in front of or over you.
